Money in Paphos, Cyprus
Currency
Currency: Cypriot
Pound (CYP). CYP1=100 cents
Notes: CYP1, 5,
10 and 20
Coins: 1, 2, 5,
10, 20 and 50 cents
Credit cards: Internationally
recognised credit cards such as American Express and Visa are widely accepted
in all tourist areas. If exploring elsewhere don't assume that you can use credit
cards however, and carry sufficient cash for your immediate needs.
Exchange
Tourist areas and airports have numerous bureaux de change where you can exchange
most foreign currencies. Euros, pounds sterling or US dollars usually secure the
best exchange rates. You can also exchange foreign currencies at banks and some
hotels. Banks usually offer the most favourable exchange rates.
You may be able to use networked ATMs to withdraw local currency direct
from your bank account. You will usually be charged for this facility per transaction
however and should check with your bank before leaving as to compatibility with
Cypriot machines and what costs it will entail.
The core opening hours for banks are Mon-Fri 08h00-14h00 but during the peak tourist
season of the summer this is usually extended to 16h00 for exchange facilities.
Costs
Below are approximate costs for the following items:
| Bottle of beer | CYP0.70 (shop) CYP2.50 (bar) |
| Bottle of wine | CYP3 (shop) CYP10 (restaurant) |
| Can of Coke | CYP0.40 |
| Short bus journey | CYP0.50 |
| Litre of petrol | CYP0.50 |
| Packet of cigarettes | CYP1.50 |
Tax Refund
Watch for shops displaying a "Tax-free shopping" symbol: spend more than CYP100 there (or in their chain of shops), and you can obtain a Value Added Tax (VAT) refund by mail when you have customs officials stamp your paperwork on leaving the country.
Service Charges
Service is generally not included in bills and will be specified if it is. A 10% tip is considered adequate in most circumstances. Taxi drivers usually expect that you will round up the bill to the nearest Cypriot pound.
